Heroin is an illegal drug that is extremely addictive, and is made from a substance found in poppy plants called opium. Before opium can be refined into morphine, the substance is modified to create heroin. Due to its extremely addictive nature, heroin is a widely abused drug in the United States. Heroin is a street drug sold in many different forms such as brown or white powder, tar heroin which is a sticky black substance, and in solid black chunks. Each form can be snorted, smoked, or injected directly into the veins, under skin, or into muscles. Regardless of how it is used, heroin potent and quick acting. Physical signs of heroin addiction include constricted pupils lasting four to five hours after drug use, disorientation, shallow breathing, neglected personal hygiene and physical appearance, and rapid weight loss or weight gain, the appearance of track marks, changes in behavior such as depression and social withdraw, and drowsiness that can last for several hours.
